Follow These Simple Steps to Help Protect Your Home Against Wildfires

Wildfire season is once again upon us. Take some simple but vital steps to mitigate the danger to your home from potential wildfires. As a long-time member of the National Fire Protection Association, Mountain Alarm is proud to share the NFPA’s “Home Ignition Zone Checklist.”

From roof to foundation, here are some steps to make your home safer from fire, embers, and radiant heat:

• Clean roofs and rain gutters of dead leaves, debris, and pine needles that embers could easily ignite

• Replace or repair any loose or missing shingles or tiles to prevent embers from penetrating

• Reduce the chance of embers passing through vents in the eaves by installing 1/8-inch metal mesh screens

• Clean debris from exterior attic vents and install the same type of screens

• Repair or replace damaged or loose window screens and any broken windows

• Screen or box-in areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent debris and combustible materials from accumulating

• Move any flammable material such as mulch, plants, leaves, and needles away from exterior walls

• Remove any potential hazard stored underneath decks and porches
